Old Series - Britain’s 19th-century landscape re-projected and enlarged to match the present-day Ordnance Survey Landrangers®

These maps are based on Britain's first national mapping project, Ordnance Survey's One-Inch (‘Old Series’) maps which were first published between 1805 and 1874. They have all been carefully scanned, digitally re-projected and enlarged to match the present-day Ordnance Survey Landranger® series. Each Cassini Old Series map is directly comparable with the corresponding Ordnance Survey Landranger® and uses the same sheet number and grid references, so enabling the past and the present to be compared with ease and accuracy. All the Old Series maps of England & Wales (123 in all) have now been published

Past & Present - Four maps in one – a unique way to discover the landscapes of the past
Each Past & Present map is centred on a city or town and covers an area of 15km x 15km using four Ordnance Survey mapping series to cover four different periods: the mid 19th century, the late 19th century, the1920s and the present-day. All four maps cover exactly the same area. To achieve this, the three historical maps have been enlarged from their original inch-to-the-mile to match the 1:50,000 scale of the present-day one. The addition of the familiar National Grid on all four maps enables easy comparison across the four time periods. Historical notes, details of the original maps used and web-links for local history societies and other sources of information are also provided. All in all, comparing the past with the present has never been easier!

Cassini Historical Maps of London
The Cassini Historical Maps of London provide a unique and fascinating overview of 150 years of London’s rich history from 1805 to 1946.They reveal how the capital engulfed surrounding villages to become, for much of this period, the largest city in the world. Each map explores a crucial period in London’s recent history: the late Georgian (1805-22), the late Victorian railway era (1897-8), the dawn of the motoring age (1919-20) and the period of reconstruction following the Second World War (1945-6). Cartographical and historical notes provide background information to help bring London’s past to life.

Each of the four maps covers an identical area, extending from Bushey to Theydon Bois and from Esher to Halstead – roughly the area within today’s M25.
